At Willow Wood Community Primary School, we are committed to preparing our children to become caring, responsible and active members of society. Through our school values of Inspire, Believe, Challenge and Achieve, we help children develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to thrive in modern Britain and the wider world. Our approach to teaching British Values is rooted within our wider commitment to inclusion, equality and respect for all.
We actively promote the fundamental British Values of Democracy, The Rule of Law, Individual Liberty, Mutual Respect and Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs. These values are woven throughout school life and are reflected in our curriculum, assemblies, enrichment activities and everyday interactions. Through opportunities such as School Council, Picture News discussions, leadership roles and collaborative learning, children learn how to make positive contributions to their school and community.
We believe that every child should have the opportunity to develop their own voice, make informed choices, understand their rights and responsibilities, and show respect for the views, beliefs and experiences of others. Our broad and balanced curriculum helps children to develop an understanding of the diverse society in which they live and encourages them to celebrate differences while recognising the values that unite us.
As part of our commitment to equality, we teach children about the importance of respecting and valuing people regardless of the protected characteristics defined within the Equality Act 2010. Through age-appropriate learning experiences, pupils develop an understanding that everyone should be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their age, disability, race, religion or belief, sex, gender reassignment, sexual orientation, marriage and civil partnership, or pregnancy and maternity. This helps our children to become compassionate, inclusive and respectful members of society.
At Willow Wood, we celebrate the uniqueness of every individual and foster a culture where everyone feels safe, valued and empowered to achieve their full potential. By promoting British Values alongside equality, diversity and inclusion, we help our pupils develop into confident, respectful and resilient young people who are prepared for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.
Through our commitment to British Values, equality and inclusion, we ensure that our children not only achieve academically but also grow into thoughtful citizens who make a positive difference in their communities and the wider world.
Here is our British Values curriculum:
Each week, our children participate in an assembly created by Picture News which is an educational current affairs resource for schools. Each week the children are exposed to British Values and Protected Characteristics linked to the story that they are exploring.
